Usui Reiki is a practice formed in Japan in the early 1900's by Mikao Usui. Although its roots are much older and are based in Eastern traditions (especially Buddhism), people of any spiritual/religious faith can benefit from receiving this form of healing. It has been practised in the West since the 1930's and is being used with ever greater frequency in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice and complimentary/alternative medical settings.
Reiki sessions involve the placement of the therapist's hands on specific areas of the body to facilitate energy-based healing. The flow of energy allows the client to enter a state of deep relaxation, thereby facilitating a path of self-healing. The client remains fully clothed during these sessions.
